A VR escape room. Created using Unreal Engine 5, compatible with the Meta Quest 3.
The brief is to create a mixed reality interactive performance to engage visitors in a creative way with a chosen setting. By ‘setting’, we mean a particular physical site at a specific location, or the generalisation of that setting.
By interactive performance, there should be some aspect of human performance in the experience. This could be storytelling, theatre, animation, music, a light show, physical puppeteering, etc. It must be interactive - That means that it has to be affected by the user's choices in some way.
Creating a VR Game has been on my list of future projects, so I couldn't say no to the opportunity of utilising a Meta Quest headset. While creating this game, I was also balancing my other projects: creating an OpenGL scene, learning and implementing advanced algorithms and data structures using Haskell and writing my Literature Review for my dissertation. Consequently, organisation was essential. Having all my tasks written down in organised lists has always aided me in completing my projects, in addition to consistently working on each project bit by bit while prioritising the most important tasks.
Having completed these projects within the set deadlines was extremely gratifying. When looking back on my time during my master's, I often think about this semester and the workload I managed to carry. I am quite proud of the challenges I faced and the overall projects I managed to create.
Finally, I want to give a special thanks to the energy drinks that got me through the long nights; I couldn't have done it without you.
